Kaqavaberd is located in the Ararat region of Armenia, the territory of Khosrov reserve, on the right bank of the Azat River, near the abandoned settlement of Berdatak in the historical Mazaz province. It is also called Tatul, Geghi or Keghi Fortress. Kakavaberd mentioned the medieval fortress by Hovhannes Draskhanakerttsi (IX-X centuries) as a dynastic domain of the Bagratuni. XI century Kaqavaberd fortress passed to the Pahlavuni dynasty, and in the XII-XIII centuries to the Proshyan dynasty. It was the base-residence of George Marzpetuni, which was described in detail by the great novelist Muratsan in the historical novel "George Marzpetuni".
Kaqavaberd Fortress
Kaqavaberd fortress is located on the top of 2075 m high mountain, surrounded by deep valleys on three sides. The 2-2.5 m thick fences to the northeast, the 8-10 m high towers, the ruins of the church and economic buildings inside the castle have been preserved.
Kaqavaberd is of great historical and cultural value; for centuries, its role has been widely used to study the history of both Mazaz province and the entire Ayrarat province. Kakavaberd is one of the best examples of castle construction in historical Armenia.
