Shkhmurad Monastery is located in the Tavush Region of Armenia, on the left bank of the Varagajur River, 6-7 km southwest of Tsaghkavan village. The monastery complex was built in the 12th-13th centuries. The small plain on which the monastery is built stretches from west to east in a narrow strip. Its natural boundaries are the giant, tower-shaped rock from the west, the road passing along the foot of the steeply sloping mountain from the north, the valley in front of the rock from the south, and the river valley from the east, both of which are remote and difficult to access, with banks covered with trees and scrub.
