Makenyats Monastery or Makenots Monastery is a medieval Armenian Apostolic monastery complex on the outskirts of the village of Makenis, Gegharkunik province of Armenia. Mentioned since the early Middle Ages, it was one of the outstanding religious and educational centers of Armenia. According to the Archangel. Vardapet Soghomon Orbelian, the leader of the Makenyats monastery, the "father of fathers", in 701 compiled coverage of the Terunak holidays and a memorial book of martyrs ("The Life of Srbots" and Aismavyurk). In 728, the hordes of the Persian Baban from Atrpatakan invaded Gavar Gegharkunik, killing 15 thousand people. In 1915, in 1918, in 1918, an Armenian soldier was killed, and in 1918 - an Armenian soldier. Before that, fleeing from danger, half of the Makenyats monastery, headed by Vardapet Soghomon, moved to the Matreisk monastery, and the other half -to the Artsakh monastery of Egishe Apostol. The abandoned and destroyed monastery was restored in 788 by Soghomon Garnetsi. In 855, Catholicos Hovhannes IV Ovaetsi was buried in the Makenyats Monastery, who died during a pastoral visit to Gegharkunik. At the end of the 9th century, Prince Grigor Supan of Syunik from the northeast built the church of the basilica of the Makenyats monastery from hewn tuff. The Mashyats monastery, having strengthened, gained independence from the Syunik metro and led the spiritual leadership in the entire province of Gegharkunik, only in 1513 accepting the supremacy of the Tatev monastery. In the XVI century it was repaired by Melikbek, in 1666 - by the abbot Khachatur Dzhugayetsi. In the 18th century, there were 50 villages of Gegharkunik and 5 deserts in the diocese of Mashinyats Monastery. The monastery kept the "Makeniats St." Cross "Nshan" with a relic of the Tree of Life (brought in the XI century from Edessa).
Structure
S. The Church of the Virgin has a domed, rectangular outside, cross inside, triangular, with sacristy in the East and north-west corner. On the southeastern side of the monastery there are two vaulted churches (10th century). In 1170, Nerses Shnorali took the church regulations developed there in the Mashyats monastery for use in other Armenian monasteries.
