Karnut Reservoir is located in the Shirak Region of Armenia, near Karnut village, 1 km west of Hovit village, on the Karnut culvert, about 8 km east of Gyumri city. It was built in 1968-1975. The dam is made of earth, has a height of 34.6 m, a length of 713 m, a total volume of 22.6 million m³, a usable area of 21.8 million m³, an area of 215 ha. It is built with a homogeneous earth fill, which has a height of 34.6 m and a length of 660 m. It was commissioned in 1973. It was built for the purposes of irrigation during the Soviet Union, mainly acting as a reservoir of the Shirak MOJ system (without an inflowing river). It is fed by water from the Akhuryan River. The reservoir receives a very small volume of water from its own catchment, as well as from the Jajur River. It is mainly fed by the Shirak canal and the Karnut culvert. It freezes in winter. About 7,000 hectares of land in the regions of Akhuryan, Artik and Ani are irrigated through the Aigabats canal, the 15th divider of the Shirak canal and the Artik water station.
