Artsakh Mountains
The western slopes are short, dry and eroded, with karstic, landslide effects. The Azokh cave is known for its Neanderthal fossil remains. The vegetation in the lower zone is represented by phrygans, shibliaks and steppes. Medium elevations, especially on the eastern slopes, are covered by oak, beech and hornbeam forests, which alternate in the south with dry sparse forests, sub-alpine and alpine meadows above 2100 - 2300 m.
